For the first time in a long while, I've recorded a DJ mixset, and named after turning 21 in 2010. The original concept for this mix was to have 21 tracks to represent my 21st birthday, but that seemed a bit overkill. I was also trying to work some hip-hop into it, but that didn't work either. In the end, I recorded an improvised, electro house set that's 10 tracks and 40 minutes long. It's great to dance to, and it includes some of my favorite electro tracks of the past year. (And only two of them are popular tracks, which is lower than average for my mixes.)

During the last month of the summer, I had my new-used speakers set up in my room along with a DJ mixer and EQ/amp rack. For a while, I had been listening to compilations called "After Dark" and each one had a different globally-known city in the title. They were cheap, but worth it. I came to find out the genre was called Deep House, and I suddenly wanted to make a similar mix. What resulted was "Lounge," a short, 32 minute Deep House mix that's average but good background music.

It's been over a year since I last recorded a set. Reasons include being far too busy to even practice DJing, having my laptop lost and then replaced only to have issues with my sound card on the Mac, and feeling like I had no fresh music. During the last two weeks, I was able to resolve all of those issues, and the result is a new mix-set called Splatters of Pink, named after the crazy dream I described in an older blog.

A persuasive speech assignment brought back my anti-television mentality, and it's reflected in this mix. The intro is a sound byte from Edward R. Murrow's speech at RTNDA Chicago, 1958, as recorded in the motion picture Good Night and Good Luck. One quote from the speech used in the mix: "... unless we get up off our fat surpluses and recognize that television in the main is being used to distract, delude, amuse and insulate us, then television and those who finance it, those who look at it and those who work at it, may see a totally different picture too late."

The following track is titled "No More Lies," and the next track's lyrics speak of finding yourself. Interlude some dance tracks as if celebrating a release from TV, and conclude the mix with a remix of Seal's "Amazing," containing the lyrics, "Everyone says 'You're amazing!' now that you're clean."

Maybe I read into the songs I play a little too much, but I find some theme or meaning behind my mixes after I record them. I choose the order of the songs based on the way they sound and how they blend together.
